Watford Town CC v London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 31 Jul 2016 at 13:00
London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets
Match report
London Maccabi Vale recorded their fifth consecutive victory in the Chess Valley League on Sunday - finishing the day top of the Division Three table..
In a top-of-the-table clash away to Watford Town, LMV triumphed by four wickets after a strong all-round team performance.
Steven Allweis led the way with the ball once again, grabbing five wickets to take his season's haul to 22 in just five matches.
He struck three times early on to put the brakes on Watford Town's advances, with Adam Brand taking a superb one-handed catch at gully, and LMV then kept the pressure on with the ball and in the field.
The hosts had cashed in at the other end - racing to 50 in five overs - but with Allweis in dominant form, wickets fell at regular intervals.
Neil Lederman and Jonny Gould turned the screw in the middle overs alongside Adam Brand, who picked up three wickets to assert Vale's authority.
Allweis was rarely out of the action, producing a direct run out and wonderful catch in the deep, before returning to close out the innings with the final two wickets and dismiss Watford Town for 208.
As has been the case repeatedly this season, Danny Caro got the chase off to a solid start to take the sting out of the home side's efforts. He added more than 80 in partnership with debutant Ben Frais, who made an assured 50 to lead the charge to victory. The partnership was broken when the left-hander fell victim to a stunning direct-hit run-out.
Just as LMV were beginning to coast, however, they lost four quick wickets to a series of rash shots. A promising partnership between Ben Kohler, who cracked some impressive boundaries, saw him depart after holing out to cow corner.
Alex Haffner joined Brand at the crease and the pair settled any nerves by taking Vale close to the finishing line. Brand was dismissed with nine runs still needed, but Haffner remained unbeaten on 29 at the end to seal the win in the penultimate over, with Jonny Gould looking solid at the other end.
Next up for LMV is a first versus second home encounter with Abbots Langley - a contest in which their title credentials will be on the line.
