London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club 1st XI v Bharat Olympians on Sun 03 Jul 2011 at 13.30
London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club Won by 43 runs
Match report
An understrength Vale team showed character and determination to overcome a team that have come close to the opposition in every game they have played so far in the Middlesex Sunday League First division.
Batting was always going to be tough with only 3 batsmen in the team, however, Shultzy (62) got the team off to a great start with some strong strokes right from the off. Haffner (1) certainly got him running between the stumps and it was a shame to see him bowled with Val on 33.
In came Dan Caplan, making his first team debut for the season and with a point to prove and prove it he did giving the skipper exactly what he requested by carrying his bat whilst all around him fell.
Nelly (15) came in at number 5 & made a good start but once again got caught after skying the ball off a slower ball.
Gideon Gale was next in but unfortunately didn't get to face a ball with Caplan making his only mistake of the afternoon with some bad calling and leaving Gideon stranded without a hope of making a run. Out of the remaining 5 players it was only Andy Daniels who troubled the scorers adding some vital runs before being bowled for 15. A great effort by Dan Caplan of 47 Not Out and leaving the Vale bowlers with a decent if not great total to defend of 173.
The opposition started strong reaching 33 without loss before the skipper (Weitzman 2-23) found the breakthrough with a ball moving away from the right-handed batsman who got a thick nick on the ball before avi at Keeper gratefully sucked it up. The next ball the oppos number 3 fell in an identical fashion and now we had to pile on the pressure.
Not long had gone before Nelly (2-22) bowled the other opener and following the skippers lead then bowled their number 5 with his next ball!
At drinks we were on top but knew we had a long way to go with the opposition having 6 wickets remaining and needing just under 100 more to win the game having scored some good runs in the previous 3-4 overs.
On came Andy Landesberg and as usual answered our prayers by taking a wicket in his first over. It took a few more overs till he added to that but with an impossible not to give LBW decision he finsihed with figures of 2-26.
4 more wickets still required and the oppo had creeped toabove 100, mainly thanks to the generosity of all the Vale bowlers making sure the Wides were the oppos highest scorer with 36 runs!
Andy Daniels (2-31) who had opened the bowling without success was back on and took a wicket immediately with th batsman shipping to mid-wicket and a lovely tumbling forward catch by Shultz giving Vale the momentum we needed.
On now to surely one of the youngest players to ever play for Vale 1sts. Joe Nyman at only 14 years old & what an amazing debut for him starting with a wicket maiden with the Vale fielders backing their bowlers all the way this time via Gideon Gale (another youngster making his 1st team debut) holding on to a low catch in front of him at mid-off. 3 overs later a change of end for Nyman (2-3) and he showed his resolve by grabbing another wicket this time held by Weitzman running to his right.
Andy Daniels back on for his 3rd spell finished the game off by bowling Vale to victory with wicket no 10.
A game in which everyone contributed be it through excellent fielding from Jon Daniels, Haff and Gideon Gale, 2 wickets apiece for 5 bowlers, 2 well taken catches by Avi who is making the Keeper position his own and fantastic runs from the off from Schultz and Caplan.
Well done to all!
