MAL v London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sun 08 Aug 2010 at 13.30
London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets with 5.3 overs remaining
Match report
LMV 154 -7 (34.3 overs) beat MAL 153 all out, by 3 wickets
With both sides missing several key players, due to holidays and other commitments, this was always likely to be a closely fought contest.
Due to heavy rain the previous evening the wicket was soft and under prepared at Old Camdenians and on winning the toss LMV captain, Jonathan Lederman, had no hesitation in asking MAL to bat first.
LMV had early success as Benjamin Lederman had opener Begner well caught at slip by Andrew Greenwall Cohen, and followed this by having Landau caught in the covers by Andy Landesberg. Lazar and Plax then played well, until Jonathan Lederman removed Lazar with a swinging delivery. Plax batted well hitting anything off line expertly.
At the half way stage MAL were on 86, and LMV were pushing hard to bowl them out for under 130. Immediately after the drinks break, Marks had Traub well caught by J Lederman and runs dried up for a while. Plax was then out for 45, LBW to B Lederman and LMV looked on course to bowl out MAL very quickly. Unfortunately, despite an excellent spell of 2-28 from Joseph Greenwall Cohen, some poor fielding and field positioning coupled with dropped catches allowed MAL to reach 153 before finally being bowled out.
Although the pitch was quite bowling friendly a score of 154 should have been relatively straightforward for a team full of batsman. Somehow 12-0 turned into 36-6 as each LMV batsman managed to get themselves out. Full credit to MAL for a brilliant display of concentration and intensity, but that shouldn't disguise the lack of application and care shown by the LMV batsmen.
36-6 became 68-7 when Avi Schwartz who had shown a great deal of restraint was caught, by Gav Lebens off his own bowling, the first time he tried to cut loose.
This brought Andrew Greenwall Cohen to join the in-form Daniel Caplan. These 2 steadied the ship with stout defensive play coupled with excellent running and the odd boundary. With only a low run rate requited it now became just a matter of keeping their wickets intact. MAL rotated their bowlers cleverly to try and get the wicket that would turn the match back in their favour, but DC and AGC kept calm and brought up their 50 partnership in the 31st over. DC reached yet another 50, in what has been a fantastic season for him and with their confidence now very high, both cut loose with a succession of boundaries, including a massive six from AGC, taking them ever closer to the finishing line.
Finally in the 35th over a quick single took LMV to 154-7 to win the match by 3 wickets with 5.3 overs still remaining, Daniel Caplan finishing on 61* and Andrew Greenwall Cohen 41*, having added a brilliant 86 together.
Another Maccabi Knockout Final for LMV, but bitter disappointment for MAL. In truth MAL were probably hit harder by absences than LMV, but to win despite missing Simon Renshaw, Jonathan Freedman, Jeremy Harris and Nigel Rothband was never going to be easy.
Captain Jonathan Lederman said "We lost concentration at the end of the MAL innings which left us chasing a bigger total than we would have liked on a difficult wicket; but we should never have got ourselves into the position we did chasing 154. Well done to Daniel & Andrew, they really got their heads down and concentrated hard, ignoring everything else going on around them. We now look forward to the final with BECC on September 5th."
