Belmont Edgware v London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sun 20 Jun 2010 at 13.30
London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club Won By 6 wickets with 1 over left
Match report
Becc 1st Team 194-9 (40 overs)
LMV 2nd Team 195-4 (39 overs)
In a match of fluctuating fortunes LMV came back from last week's disappointing display to win a tight contest, with a well timed response to BECC's score at The Met Police Ground, Bushey.
BECC won the toss and decide to bat first. Missing key bowlers LMV knew it was important to make a breakthrough early on, as the usual wide array of options was not there.
BECC started off soundly, ex-LMV man Alex Goodman looked calm and assured as he moved the ball cleverly into gaps. Abraham at the other end was having trouble as he constantly played and missed at balls from openers Andrew Greenwall Cohen and Simon Renshaw. With no breakthrough on the horizon AGC was replaced by Dan Caplan, finally a breakthrough occurred with Renshaw (1-35 from 8 overs) bowling Abraham with the last ball of his spell.
Caplan was replaced by Permutt who bowled a really tight spell (0-30 from 8 overs) but it was at the other end where all the action was taking place as LMV captain Jonathan Lederman, was getting huge sideways movement bowling into the wind. Bowling Goodman for an excellent 63 he followed up with the wickets of Connick, Feigenbaum, Durban and Addlestone for figures of 5-35 from his 8 overs.
This left BECC at 123-8, however with the main bowlers now mostly used up, Mcleod (12), Averbuch (37*)and Myeroff (12*) batted sensibly to take BECC to 194-9 after the 40 overs.
After the 10k walk to the tea room and back, Nigel Rothband continued his rich vein of form as he and a subdued Mark Spanjar started the reply. A stand of 48 was broken as Spanjar (11) played across the line to Connick's 2nd delivery and was bowled. Jeremy Harris joined Rothband and the forward lung was soon in evidence to good effect as he drove the ball well down the ground. With these 2 going well LMV were 83-1 after 20 overs needing another 112 to win. Rothband (53) reached an excellent 50 but was out soon after that bringing Jonathan Cantor to the crease. He and Harris ran beautifully between the wickets putting pressure on the BECC fielders and keeping the runs coming, although slightly behind the required rate.
We then had a brief period straight out of the Billy Smarts Circus Annual as JC pulled a muscle and called for a runner. Before the runner (Spanjar) could kit up, Harris (41) was bowled by Neil Myeroff, Harris took on the job of runner as Dan Caplan joined JC at the crease. Just as Spanjar was ready to replace Harris as JC's runner, JC was out.
Captain Leders came in to join Cappers with 5.1 overs remaining and 38 required. Immediately these 2 put even more pressure on BECC's bowling and fielding running singles to almost everything and turning 1's into 2's. 11 off the 36th over and 5 off the 37th over brought the requirement down to 22 off 3 overs. 9 runs off the 38th over and 10 runs off the 39th over meant that only 3 were required off the last over. The first ball was skied for a quick 2, but a misfield allowed a third run and it was all over. Dan Caplan finished on 25* having batted and run superbly, well supported by Leders 12*.
Captain Leders said "A great result against a strong BECC side. We were weakened by the absence of key bowlers but gave our all in the field and despite sloppily conceding a few too many runs in the last 10 overs we knew if we batted sensibly we could get a win. All of our batters did well in putting BECC under pressure, special mention to Nigel Rothband and Jeremy Harris for top knocks."
