London Maccabi Vale U17s finally got their rain-stricken season underway with a comfortable 6 wicket win over Enfield at Rowley Lane on Monday night. Enfield won the toss and chose to bat on a pitch still a touch damp after the weekend’s downpours. The decision looked was made to look a little foolish as wickets fell regularly, Josh Frey capturing 2 in the second over, Sim Cohen taking one in the 3rd and one in the 5th, as Enfield lurched to 4-4 and then 10-5. Vale captain Ben Lederman rang the changes in the bowling, allowing 8 of his side to bowl, with Enfield battling hard to get to a total. After a decent partnership Lederman brought back himself, Sim Cohen, and Josh Frey, who quickly mopped up the tail between them, bowling Enfield out for 58. Josh Frey was the top wickettaker, finishing with 4-9, but Lederman and Cohen were equally as impressive with their returns of 3-7 apiece. The catching was outstanding throughout by Vale’s youngsters, with Josh Frey, Zack Frey and Jonny Gould taking particularly decent catches.

In reply, Enfield used a wholly spin attack, with their bowlers finding plenty of turn but not enough consistency. Jonny Gould was caught behind, and Gideon Gale bowled, but Ben Lederman injected some impetus, striking a couple of boundaries, as he reached 18 before he holed out at long on. David Hirschowitz batted solidly for 8, but it was left to Sim Cohen to finish the game with a couple of lusty blows to the legside to finish on 14 not out.

An excellent performance from Vale’s youngsters, particularly in the field, where they showed excellent discipline.
