Abbotts Langley v London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club 1st XI on Sun 11 Jul 2010 at 12.30
London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club Won by 23 runs
Match report
Another nail biting game with the 1st team once again victorious against very strong opposition. Skipper Brand won the toss on a very hot day and chose to bat on what looked a perfect batting track with a lightening outfield. In fact in their league game the day before Abbotts Langley had chased 290 down and won!
A new opening partnership (thanks for volunteering Dan) didn’t flourish and we were soon 35 for 3 and really struggling against 2 young Herts U17 bowlers. Caro, Brand and Becker were all dismissed and with a long tail we feared a low score. However, Alex Haffner making his first appearance for the 1st team this season settled into a familiar role of crease occupation mixed with some unbelievable running between the wickets. He was joined by JG who unleashed some imperious drives down the ground and square of the wicket which knocked the wind out of the Abbotts Langley sails. They put on a rapid 70 run partnership in 10 overs before JG departed for an excellent 52 (11 x 4's). Debutant Ben Sheldon was the next batsman in and he showed he had a good technique and a good eye. Unfortunately both he and Alex departed in quick succession, Haff for a patient and well made 52 (9x 4) and Ben for 14 caught on the boundary. The tail folded quickly with some poor shot selection and we were all out for 159 having been 140 for 4.
Attacking fields were set early on in the Abbots reply but despite an early wicket from Saul we couldn’t pick up another early wicket.. However, with the introduction of the accurate Kangisser and the excellent spell from Saul (who picked up the number 3 (who was due to play some ICC cricket for Malta) we had the oppo at 40 for 3. Their Aussie was soon unleashing some expansive drives which put us on the backfoot. It was time to unleash our own monster Andy Landesberg who immediately started to make things happen. A dropped catch by Dan Cohen could have been expensive, however, Andy bowled their Aussie and then picked up another wicket whilst continuing to encourage the whole team to fight till the end. Meanwhile Ryan had finished his impressive spell with 2-20 . Brando came on to mop up the tail with 3-13 and despite some concerns at the end when a few boundaries were hit we ended up winners by 23 runs. It was a fantastic effort in the field and one that was enjoyed by everyone..
