MAL v London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sun 23 May 2010 at 13.45
London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club Lost A close match we probably should have won
Match report
Monday, 24 May 2010
LMV 2nd XI contrived to lose a match they seemed to be well on the way to winning.
LMV won the toss and on a blisteringly hot day batted first. "Bomber" Harris and Spanjar took the score to 30 before Spanjar was given out LBW. Harris was joined by Scott Gerard and they put on 109 runs together as a succession of excellent offside shots from Harris and some clever shots from Gerard, including a few audacious reverse sweeps, pierced the field. Gerard reached a fine 50 before being given out LBW. A flurry of wickets including Harris for an excellent 61, slowed the LMV charge for a while but a fine cameo from Jonathan "10K" Cantor (32*) and great support play from Dan Caplan (13) meant LMV reached 223-7 after 40 overs.
MAL set off quickly at the start of their innings but after Jonathan Freedman made the initial breakthrough with a 3 wicket burst (3-38) and David Marks followed up with the wicket of his best friend Anthony Wise, it seemed that LMV were well on top. When Jonathan Lederman replaced Marksy and took a wicket in his first over, the match looked to be there for the taking, but LMV's intensity slipped and some poor fielding and bowling kept MAL in the hunt.
At one point the rate rose to well over 8 an over, however a couple of big overs, brought the target down to 24 off 4 overs and despite 3 further wickets from Leders Snr, (4-37) his last ball was hit for 4 meaning that Benjamin Lederman had to bowl the last over with the scores level and 8 wickets down. Ben cleaned bowled the number 10, Klinger and almost cleaned up Avi Gelley next ball, but his following delivery was deemed a leg side wide, so giving MAL a 1 wicket victory.
Grant Traub batting at #7 for MAL was probably MOTM with a fine 38 not out, following an excellent spell of left arm spin 8-0-24-1.
This leaves LMV still winless this season after 4 matches. A much more competitive display, but still plenty of room for improvement all round
