London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club 1st XI v Finchley on Sun 31 Jul 2011 at 13.30
London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club Won by 128 runs
Match report
An emphatic and well deserved victory that helps to push forward Vale 1sts title challenge.
With what seemed like a weakened 1st eleven Vale won the toss and elected to bat first, confident that their strong bowling line-up would be able to defend most scores.
The 2nd team regulars clearly saw an opening for a more regular 1st team slot with NiJel (18) and Cappers (11) proving the team with a solid start before both being bowled. Jacob Freedman (8) hit a couple of big shots before bowing out and then came the stand that really cemented the Vale innings.
Having been shown confidence by the Skipper, JD (17) rewarded this by hitting a couple of beautiful off-drives at the beginning of an innings that was all about staying around, seeing off the Finchley's dangerous darting bowler who had already taken the wicket of Cappers before having Nelly in trouble early on. Nelly (63) was given most the strike and hit some lusty blows over the top of the field before the partnership of over 50 was broken with JD moaning about back problems and getting caught.
Things could have gone wrong after another quick wicket with Avi being stumped, however, instead the game was put pretty safe by a fantastic innings from AGC. Nelly took a back seat whilst AGC started hitting the boundaries in another partnership of over 50. Nelly was out caught in his usual place of a slightly deeper mid-on, however, the team were already on over 200 with about 4 overs still remaining. Weitzman (13) came in to support AGC, however, after 3 sixes - one of them huge - AGC missed the ball and was bowled just short of what would have been a deserved 50 on 47.
In came another debutant in Josh Frey and managed to stay around a while before being caught when Freedy joined Weitzman. The runs were mounting through a few wides and well as Weitzman nicked the strike off a selfless Freedy he was out to a lovely deep slip catch. Some quick running in the final over betweeen Kangi 1N.O. and Freedy 1N.O kept the scoreboard ticking and at 40 overs Finchley had been set a total of 243 to win.
Vale bowlers to the ready and the aim being to make sure Finchley didn't get close to the 6 runs an over that they needed. The bowlers carried on where the batsmen had started off. Kangi firing on all cylinders and Freedy (0-20) running up the hill (yes, even at his age!) and keeping the runs down to about 14 off the first 6 overs with Kangi (1-20) having taken an early wicket too.
Nelly (2-21 & definitely now an all-rounder) came on first change and snapped up another couple of wickets whilst also keeping the economy rate down. Weitzman (1-21) followed suit grabbing a wicket at last with his slower ball before AGC competed with Nelly for "All-Rounder of the Day" with a fantastic return of 3-21 off his allotted 8 overs. One of those wickets though being a brilliant (those that know his fielding skills might rather say lucky...) catch by Nelly! We have to finish with some more hype for the 15 year-old debutant Josh Frey. With Finchley in trouble Josh made sure of turning the screw by finishing with figures of 2-10 off 4.4 overs and also having 3 dropped chances in that time too, although one would have been his own C&B!
With thanks also to Zak Frey, acting as substitute fielder for the broken JD Vale really did put on a great show and put the pressure is on MTSCC who are topping the Middlesex Sunday league but now have a inferior run rate to our own due to the glorious nature of this victory.
Well done to the team and a shared Man of the Match award between Nelly and AGC!
