MAL v London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club 2nd XI on Sun 05 Jun 2011 at 13.30
London Maccabi Vale Cricket Club Lost By 6 wickets with 14 over remaining (wopped)
Match report
LMV 2nd XI 167-7 (40 overs) lost to MAL 1st XI 168-4 by 6 wickets
A 3rd successive league defeat is disappointing enough, but the fact that we have not really competed in any of the matches is even more disappointing. Even making allowances for the fact that losing the toss and being asked to bat first on an awkward pitch which flattened out after the rain; we cannot ignore the fact that we need to improve in all three aspects of the game if we are going to be more competitive.
Nigel Rothband (straight from his sick bed) was out to the first legitimate delivery of th match soon to be followed by Jonathan Cantor, also for a duck. Jeff Permutt and Jonathan Lederman set about building a total, but with the bowling being very accurate and the pitch playing very awkwardly not much progress was made.
Jeff hit some nice shots but was eventually caught behind for 32. Dan Caplan came to the wicket and the run rate started to increase, but Lederman was bowled after a stand of 37, for a painstaking 17.
Dan followed soon after for a quickfire 24, but some enterprising batting from Jonathan Daniels (27 N.O.), Jonathan Freedman (15) and Adam Morris (14 N.O.) plus some handy extras allowed LMV to score 167, well in excess of what looked possible at the halfway stage.
In reply Freedman struck an early blow for LMV clean bowling one of the openers, but Mark Landau batted sensibly for MAL until Permutt had him LBW to one that moved a lot. However that only brought Yoav Lebens to the crease and he was soon in full flow. Despite several bowling changes, looking for the ideal combination, MAL's run rate was always well ahead of the required rate, not helped by some very poor fielding. MAL closed in on victory and only 2 late wickets, one each for Simeon Cohen and Adam Morris salvaged any respectability.
The match was all over with 14 overs left.
Not many positives to take from the match, but the hope that we can only improve!
